Constitution and Economic Aspirations in Birgunj

Our organization facilitated different consultation meetings in Biratnagar, Birgunj, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Kathmandu throughout the month of March. These meetings were organized to learn about the economic aspirations of Nepalese living in different parts of the country and to identify policy priorities based on those aspirations. CA members, local level political and business leaders, journalists and lawyers showed up with active participation.

The consultation in Birgunj on 14th March, 2014 was attended by altogether 29 participants that consisted of local level business leaders, academicians, youths, lawyers, local leaders and journalists. The program was moderated by advocate Anjan Dahal, and was also facilitated by Honorable Ms. Kalpana Subedi, Constituent Assembly Member from Communist Party of Nepal– Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), and Honorable Mr. Abhisekh Pratap Shah of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, Nepal (MJFNN) and Mr. Jagdish Agrawal, Chairman of the Nimbus Group, Ms. Charu Chadda, Editor, Business 360 also represented the private sector from Kathmandu.

In Birgunj, participants envisioned economic prosperity as a state where the private sector takes lead in the economy while the state provides social welfare. Participants identified ‘Rule of Law’ as a primary foundation to economic prosperity. The viewed the state’s role as a facilitator of the economy by providing the right environment and adequate infrastructure. Besides this, the participants wanted the state to concentrate on providing social welfare services to everyone.
