Constitution and Economic Aspirations in Nepalgunj

The Freedom House held different consultation meetings in Biratnagar, Birgunj, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Kathmandu throughout the month of March. These meetings were organized to learn about the economic aspirations of Nepalese living in different parts of the country and to identify policy priorities based on those aspirations. CA members, local level political and business leaders, journalists and lawyers showed up with active participation.

On 15th March, 2014, altogether 30 participants including local level business leaders, lawyers, academics, youth representatives, local level representatives of political parties, representatives of non‐governmental organizations and educational institutions joined the consultation program moderated by Mr. Khimlal Devkota, Legal Expert. The program was also facilitated by Hon’ble Mr. Rajib Shah, Constituent Assembly Member from Nepali Congress, Hon’ble Mr. Shakti Basnet, Constituent Assembly Member from Unified Communist Party of Nepal – Maoists (UCPN‐Maoists), and Mr. Deependra Tandon, Director, Business Advantage Private Limited.

Participants in Nepalgunj envisioned economic prosperity as a state where the fundamental needs of the citizens were fulfilled and industry and the economy was prosperous. They put forward policy and political stability and federalism and decentralization as key pre‐requisites to economic prosperity. Assigning the state, the role of a facilitator, participants expressed that the key role of the state was ensuring rule of law and developing physical infrastructure.
