Liberty Discussion Session for the month of July 2020 was held on 31st July 2020 via the virtual platform of Google Meet. The discussion was based on the selected reader titled “As Inequality grows, so does the political influence of the rich” originally published in The Economist.
The discussion session revolved around multiple issues relating to whether economic inequality is tolerable, the role and success of democracy are minimizing economic and social inequality, and most importantly, whether it is possible for a democratic institution to get rid of political lobbying practices that enable the richer end of the inequality to control political decisions. Meanwhile, the discussion also touched upon whether democratic principles and values imported from western civilization are effective in responding to the unique socio-economic context of Nepal that reserves its own sorts of inequalities.
