Leveraging Blended Finance & Gender Lens Investing for Economic Growth

Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) and Samriddhi Foundation, in partnership with Society of Economic Journalists in Nepal (SEJON) and Federation of Woman Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal (FWEAN), organized a two day seminar on Blended Finance and Gender Lens Investing: Tools to Achieve the SDGs on the 13th and 14th of January, 2020 at Kathmandu Marriott Hotel. Hon’ble Dr. Yubaraj Khatiwada, Minister of Finance delivering the opening speech remarked that access to inclusive finance for entrepreneurs across Nepal was key for the economic growth of Nepal.

Ms. Katie Turner, Senior Director, Global Programs, MEDA delivered the Technical Keynote on Concessional Finance in Blended Finance. The first day of the seminar featured panel discussion and fireside chats with representatives of prominent impact investment funds, venture capitals, and other key stakeholders in Nepal’s investment ecosystem. The speakers agreed that to create opportunities that make way for meaningful jobs and facilitate harnessing the rich potential of the private sector, particularly the SMEs, Nepal needs investor friendly policy environment.

Aimed at drawing inputs from various international and local actors in the market on the opportunities for both women and men across the private sector (investors, business owners, employees), the second day of the seminar was centered on Gender Lens Investing. Mrs. Ambika Shrestha, President, Dwarika’s Hotel and Resorts delivered the opening speech.

Dr. Linda Jones, Vice President, Partnerships and Innovation, MEDA delivered the Technical Keynote on Gender Lens Investing at the launch of the second workshop. Prominent entrepreneurs, Gender and Social Inclusion experts from different development agencies, and bankers took part in panel discussions and fireside chats.
