Research, Evidence and State Building

Nepal’s democratic transition offers important lessons on the relationship between conflict, inclusion, and state-building. Emerging from a decade-long civil conflict, the country has sustained democratic competition and avoided a return to violence, yet important questions remain regarding the quality of governance, political participation, and inclusive development.

Drawing on research in economics, public policy, and political science, Chandra discusses how institutions shape citizens’ engagement with the state. He also shares highlights from his research examining the effect of conflict on voter turnout.
